Abstract
The harpacticoid copepod Tisbe sp. has been reared in the laboratory at 20-23°C, 36‰ salinity, and a diet of Nitzschia closterium f. minutissima (=Phaeodactylum tricornutum) under three illumination conditions, continuous darkness, continuous light, and photoperiod 15:9 (L:D). In continuous darkness the females produced less egg sacs, but the number of nauplii per sac and the total production of adults was the highest, the life span was shorter (sooner and shorter reproductive stage). In photoperiod series, the number of egg sacs produced was higher, with the most productive ones in the middle of the period of female reproductive activity. In this condition the longest life span, the longest period of reproductive activity and the highest percentage of females occurred. Continuous light was the worst condition, except for the survival rate from nauplius to adulthood. The measurements and morphological changes that took place in the different development stages are given.
