Abstract
Fish feed is prone to oxidative damage, resulting in reduced feed quality and formation of toxic products. We have identified a new natural antioxidant (X2) which is superior to ethoxyquin, and which is rapidly metabolized in fish. The antioxidant is a natural component of fish muscle. Experiments demonstrated that it efficiently prevents lipid peroxidation, and that it protects carotenoids and vitamin E from oxidative decay. X2 is soluble in water as well as in fat, and is thus easy to incorporate in feed. It is much more stable than vitamin C. The compound seems to have growth-stimulating effects.
