Abstract
Public sea ranching is practised on the Swedish west coast since 1979 with several stocks of Atlantic salmon. The total reported recapture rate for tagged fish was 18.7% or 520kg per 1 000 smolts released as an average for the best stock when released at the best place. Within the municipality in question 50-75% of the recaptures were made at the coast and in the river, corresponding to almost 400kg per 1 000 smolts released of the best stock. Swedish fishermen took 84% of the recaptures. Most of the rest were reported from the feeding grounds at Greenland and the Faroes (7%) and on spawning migration along the Norwegian coast (7%). The results imply that sea ranching activities are highly profitable for municipalities in this area with most of the salmon stocks tested, and smolt releases will continue in increasing numbers.
