Abstract
Microcosmic experiments were performed with the third stage larvae of the noble crayfish Astacus astacus on the island of Gotland, Sweden. During 4 months the survival and growth of larvae were studied in various stocking densities and with various food items. Both survival and growth rate was higher when the initial stocking density was low. The minimum area for a good survival rate was one larva 2dm-2. The highest individual growth rate was obtained in the lowest stocking density, or when Neomysis integer, a combination of N. integer and Chara fragilis, or eel pellets were offered as feed. The highest biomass increase was obtained when N.integer was offered as food item. The biomass gain was similar in the lowest and highest stocking.
