Abstract
Since its beginnings during the mid 1970's as a government-funded fisheries development project, the Prince Edward Island cultured-mussel (Mytilus edulis industry has become a significant contributor to the Island's fishing economy. A high quality mussel is produced using longline systems. The industry is rapidly growing and comprises appoximately 75 operations ranging in size from site-assessment to full-scale corporate enterprises. The operations of the industry are summarized, paying particular attention to unique harvesting techniques used during winter when all mussel-growing waters are covered with ice 30-90cm thick
