Abstract
At the present time the commercial culture of the flat oyster, Ostrea edulis L., is in a critical stage in Spain, due to the disappearance of natural populations and the necessity of spat imports. Investigations were carried out during 1986 to study the spat settiement in the oyster bank of the coastal lagoon Mar Menor (SE of Spain). Eight types of collectors were constructed and placed on the oyster bed in May-June 1986. At the end of November 1986, the collectors were taken out of the water. The spat was removed, counted, and measured for height. The settlement results, mortality rate, and cost of collectors were determined for each type of collector. Settlements density varied from 70.93 spat.m-2 to 1 200.65.m-2, depending on collector type and depth, the highest values being reached with collectors placed at 1m from the bottom. The period of maximum settlement was July accounting for 97% of the total settlements. The mortality due to removal was less than 1% for most of the collectors used, but reached 60% for the roof tile collectors.
