Abstract
Aquaculture using the warm effluents of the nuclear power plant at Gravelines was initiated in 1982 by a local authority: the "Syndicat Mixte pour l'étude d'un Réseau d'Aquaculture à Gravelines" (SERAG). The pilot project was achieved by 1984. It includes a production-scaled fish farm, run by the company Aquanord, and a research and development station under the responsibility of IFREMER, a national research institute. The mean resources of the site, ie the warm effluent and the seawater at natural temperature, are described in their main physical and chemical characteristics. The advantages of their use are given. The factors of risk (eg chlorine residual, supersaturation) are evaluated as well as possible treatments. The technical bases are presented for the sea bass, sea bream and turbot grow-on phase. The future scaling-up with the concept of aquaculture lots is decribed from a technical point of view. Elements of viability and hydraulics are briefly discussed.
