Abstract
It has long been recognized that the commercial success or failure of an aquaculture project depends upon the site selected for the operation. Ventures have failed to become profitable or even fully operational for reasons related to, for example, inadequate technology transfer or water properties, while others never proceeded further than a development plan due to unexpected instability of a political system. This paper describes, by means of practical examples, important factors ( social, legal, technical, and others) which need to be taken into account when considering the establishment of an aquaculture project. The need for an integrated multidisciplinary approach in order to ensure the succesful establishment of a project, including technology transfer and provision of appropriate managerial skills, is illustrated.
