Abstract
    During recent years the aquaculture industry along the Norwegjan coast has faced problems and losses due to incidental blooms of toxic phytoplankton species. To allow an early warning of the occurrence of possible harmful concentrations of toxic algae a few, presumable key species, i.e. Gyrodinium aureolum and Dinophysis spp., were monitored. These species seem to be distributed along the Norwegian coast, mainly according to the propagation of the Norwegian coastal current, which starts in the Skagerrak area. The basis of the monitoring programme consists in 1) sampling about each month along a section across the Skagerrak, and 2) sampling twice a week or more frequently at Flodevigen Biological Station. The sampling programme is extended to more stations along the coast trom August to November, the most likely period tor G. aureolum to occur, or when initial populations of toxic species are observed in the basic programme. Thanks to monitoring it has been possible to give early warning on the risks tor the mass occurrence of G.aureolum.
