Abstract
This investigation was carried out in order to determine the growth rate and to figure out the influence of the predators of the carpet shells and also to develop a suitable method for the aquaculture of Ruditapes decussatus, which are collected in the natural biotopes in Turkish waters. After 16 months the carpet shells in Enez, Isik Dalian, with a minor axis of 20.1mm reached 29.7mm, their weights increasing from 4.5g to 14g. Growth was fast in the first year and slower in the beginning of the second year. In Isik Dalian, the growth was mainly observed in the spring and in summer months, starting at the beginning of March, April, speeding up by time and reaching the highest levels in July and August. Later on growth slowed down, reaching a minimum. The mortality was found to be around 15-18%. In Enez-Isik Dalian, the crab Carcinus maenas (Linnaeus, 1758) was a very harmful predator. For this reason, in Isik Dalian the aquaculture of Ruditapes decussatus in cages gave good results.
