Abstract
    Fish are easily stressed. Stress can be brought about in many ways, such as by a deterioration in water quality, disease, social interaction amongst the fish, crowding, etc. It is probably impossible to avoid stressing fish while they are being farmed, because many procedures, such as grading, moving and transporting fish, are unavoidable. However, stress affects fish in many ways, reducing their overall performance. This review discusses some of the important deleterious effects of stress on farmed fish; its aim is to demonstrate the very serious consequences of stress, and by bringing these to the attention of fish farmers, I hope that they will do all they can to minimize the amount of stress their fish are subjected to.
