Abstract
The objective of this overview is to estimate the possible biological effects on the Dutch coastal marine ecosystem of increased UV-B irradiation caused by a thinning of the ozone layer. As no relevant UV-B data or biological effect data are available for the Dutch coastal waters,extra-polations from the literature for other areas are necessary. This paper is based on an extensive literature survey (KRAMER, 1987). Many processes affect the transmission of UV-B in the atmosphere and in seawater. From the various physical, (photo)chemical and biological processes that interfere with the transmission of UV-B and the biological (adverse) effects that have been observed in laboratory experiments and in the natural environment, predictions are made of the possible effects on organisms in the water column and on the tidal flats. It is concluded that the relatively high concentrations of suspended particulate matter in the water column. On the tidal flats, however, effects on benthic organisms are expected due to the shallow water depth and the low turbidity of water at low tide. Experiments are necessary to confirm these predictions.
