Abstract
A broad view of the main physical features of the Kuroshio is presented. The characteristics of the Kuroshio are discussed in three separate geographical divisions, namely, the Philippine Sea between Luzon and Taiwan, the East China Sea, and the area south of Japan. Special attention is also given to the interaction of the Kuroshio with marginal seas and epicontinental seas in the first two geographical divisions. Physical features of these seas per se are, however, not covered in this review. In the area south of Japan special attention is given to the large stationary meander path pattern of the Kuroshio, which is a unique feature among all western boundary currents of the world.
