Abstract |
During mass extinctions, the "Lazarus effect" corresponds to the apparent extinction of taxa that later reappear unscathed. Very useful for the species level in highly detailed studies, we demonstrate that this concept becomes ambiguous when used for supraspecific taxa. As the recovery in identical environments is linked to the convergence phenomenon, some new taxa look like taxa living before the mass extinction though they have another evolutionary origin. Recently these convergent or homoplasic forms have been called "Elvis taxa". We think that this new concept is unnecessary. |
