Abstract
In the bisexual form, A. salina has been considered as single species, while the parthenogenetic forms (diploid, tetraploid, triploid, octo or decaploid), not being open to genetic analysis, are difficult to define taxonomically. This paper covers the problem of speciation in bisexual specimens living in different areas of America, Europe and Africa. Shrimps of different origin and from the same place have been crossed in different combinations and reproductive isolation was found. The observations (by several authors) which were made in some cases by analysis of morphological and physiological characters, and sometimes also with a cytological check, are summarized; the data indicate the existence of 3 sibling species: A. salina, A. persimilis and a still unnamed American form common in California and Utah. Their characteristics are listed. This fractioning of the original species poses some problems, which are discussed.
