Beschrijving

The goal of this work was to assess and describe the presence of microlitter in the marina of Nieuwpoort, Belgium, on a slipway and in surface water, as part of a pilot study for the TREASURE project (Interreg North Sea). The dataset includes a description of methodology for sampling and sample processing, area, particles dimension, mass, color, polymer and method of sample processing, as well as assessed environmental parameters.

meer

The present dataset contains results on particles dimensions, mass, colors, shape, polymer type with the corresponding matching score and sampling parameters. The particles collected from the riverbank were cleaned, left to dry and measured in length and width thanks to a digital caliper (W-Kronen®). Mass was measured with a precise balance (VWR® Premium Analytical Balances). The water samples went through two digestive steps to get rid of the organic matter and later filtered. Microplastics particles exceeding 300 µm in length and stained with the fluorescent dye Nile red were identified using a fluorescent microscope (Leica DM1000, Leica Microsystems), and processed using the Leica Application Suite software (LAS Core, Leica Microsystems). Then, the polymer type of the selected particles was identified using a micro–Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (μ-FTIR - Spotlight 200i, Perkin Elmer) or an Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR)-FTIR (Perkin Elmer). The polymer match was accepted when the score was above 70.
