Reygondeau et al.'s (2018) mesopelagic (200 to 1000 m) provinces in the North Atlantic were characterized using scaled and gridded 38 kHz backscattering intensity (a proxy for mesopelagic fish biomass) of deep scattering layers predicted using Proud et al.'s (2017) model, and then updated using fish occurrence data collected between 1980 and 2021. The occurrence data with associated information (depth and date of collection) were retrieved from global open-access datasets Ocean Biodiversity Information System and Global Biodiversity Information Facility. The dataset contains grid coordinates (latitude/longitude pairs, projected in WGS84, representing the center point of each grid cell), the original province designation for the location and an updated province designation (where applicable). Provinces that were not updated are not included in the dataset.
