Beschrijving
East Pacific hawksbill turtles are considered one of the most endangered sea turtle populations in the world.
Principal nesting sites have been identified in El Salvador and Nicaragua with sporadic nesting in other areas including Mexico. It is estimated that between all known nesting sites only 450 to 500 nests are laid each year.
In the Mexican Pacific the main areas for hawksbill nesting are Nayarit and Jalisco states, which mark the northern nesting limit for the East Pacific hawksbill population. Few nests are registered each year (4-15 nests) however juvenile hawksbills are often reported by fishers and divers. Adult hawksbills are also occasionally reported. meer

Our project aims to increase understanding and awareness of these critically endangered turtles via tracking. Tracking will help us identify key foraging habitat and ranges for hawksbill turtles. We hope that by allowing local communities to attend the releases of tagged turtles we will create future conservation advocates for hawksbills and other sea turtles in our region.
