prof. dr. Piasecki, Wojciech

Wojciech Piasecki is a biologist who, at the master's level, majored in ichthyology, and fish parasitology. His PhD and DSc were in fish parasitology and more specifically in the biology of copepods parasitic on fishes. His academic teachers were Prof. Eugeniusz Grabda, Dr Jadwiga Grabda, and Prof. Jadwiga Wierzbicka. He also owes a lot to Dr Zbigniew Kabata who remotely helped him in copepod research. Wojciech Piasecki worked for 30 years at the Faculty of Marine Fisheries and Food Technology, Agricultural University in Szczecin and for the recent 11 years, he has been affiliated with the University of Szczecin where he is a full professor. In 1989/90, In the frames of the IREX scholarship, he worked at the California State University Long Beach under the supervision of Prof. Ju-shey Ho and at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC with Dr. Roger Cressey. In 1991, he spent four months on a TEMPUS scholarship at the Museum für Naturkunde, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin with Prof. Hans-Eckhard Gruner. Within 1991-1993, Piasecki worked in Canada (NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship) working on sea lice with Prof. Michel D.B. Burt. Dr Wojciech Piasecki described seven new species of Copepoda parasitic on fishes and two new species of Monogenea. He is known for life cycles studies of Tracheliastes maculatus, Achtheres percarum, and Caligus elongatus. Continuously, since 2002, Professor Piasecki has been the Editor-in-Chief of Acta Ichthyologica et Piscatoria, an international, fisheries journal.
