De onderzoeksgroep Evolutionaire Morfologie van Vertebraten verricht onderzoek dat vooral gericht is op adaptieve morfologische evoluties voor betere prestaties in een specifieke functie, alsook op fenotypische reacties op veranderende prestatieregimes als gevolg van wisselende selectieve druk. Verschillende disciplines en methodologieën zijn nodig om holistische informatie te verkrijgen over de morfologische diversiteit van vertebraten en de onderliggende evolutionaire patronen: dissecties, clearing-and-staining, histologische sectie en grafische 3D-reconstructies, geometrische morfometrie, taxonomie, fylogenie (morfologisch en moleculair), biomechanica en prestatietests. De expertise inzake de studie van fenotypes van gewervelde dieren wordt ook gebruikt voor meer toegepast onderzoek, zoals de beoordeling van de kwaliteit van larvale vis in de aquacultuur en de fenotypering van cranio-faciale vervormingen in modelorganismen.
Het mariene onderzoek richt zich op bio-geïnspireerd onderzoek, inclusief studies van zeepaardjes en zeesterrenskeletten en hun mogelijke gebruik in industriële ontwerpen.
De onderzoeksgroep maakt deel uit van het BLUEGent Consortium en het Marine@UGent consortium. Verder werkt de groep intensief samen met het Centrum voor Röntgentomografie (UGent, UGCT). |
