Abstract: |
The Department of Oceanography at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) originated from the Institute of Marine Biology and Oceanography, a research institute founded in 1952. This institute was the second oceanographic centre created in the country and the first in the Northeast. In 1973, as a result of an administrative reform, the institute was transformed into a department of the then UFPE Technology Centre. In 1995, with the change of name to the Centre for Technology and Geosciences (CTG), the Department of Oceanography (DOCEAN) took on its current name. |
