What is the Ocean Decade?

A global and shared effort to transform our oceans into well-functioning systems. This UN initiative aims to reach this with ten challenges in a ten-year period (2021-2030) because our oceans hold the keys to a sustainable planet.

‘Ocean Decade’ is not just for scientists, but for everyone. We can only achieve the ocean we want by working together, from all ages to all sectors, using science. Every Decade Action matters, local and international activities will be essential to achieve the Ocean Decade mission and vision.

What is VLIZ doing in the Ocean Decade?

VLIZ is engaged in many ‘Decade Actions’ (projects, activities, programs and contributions).
Some of these initiatives focus on:

Capacity development
Promoting FAIR data principles
Ocean-climate and biodiversity nexus
eDNA
Ocean hazards
Ocean literacy

National Decade Committee for Belgium and Flanders

VLIZ now acts as the secretariat of the National Decade Committee (NDC) for Belgium and Flanders. Together with the core-members of this committee, we will:

Support national members to take Decade Actions
Mobilise resources and contributions
Engage with other NDCs
Communicate, reach out and raise awareness on vision and mission of the Ocean Decade
