Abstract
This article contains a brief semi-popular review of the natural background of the fishery of the Atlantic Ocean, past and present, and its characteristics in different areas. The possibilities for future development of the fisheries are discussed. Review of the pertinent oceanograpbic factors determining the abundance and behaviour of the fishery resources, and the possibilities for location of fishable concentrations of stocks by utilizing knowledge on oceanography is given in the first section. General characteristics of the present fisheries in various areas are given in the following section. The historical developments and changes in the fisheries in some areas are briefly described and the possible causes for these changes are indicated. Finally, an analysis of the future possibilities for expansion and improvement of the fishery in different areas and the possible latent fishery resources of the Atlantic Ocean are discussed.
