Abstract
A brief description of the main hydrodynamical characteristics of the Scheldt estuary and their influence on the transport of solid are first given in order to understand the behaviour and the transfer through the estuarine zone of organic carbon and nutrients. We have then tried to evaluate the present day fluxes of organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus carried by fresh water in the Scheldt river system and to compare them to other well studies river systems in order to estimate the influence of man’s activities on the disturbances of the natural cycle. In the last part, we have analyzed qualitatively and tried to estimate quantitatively the influence of various physical, chemical and biological processes on the transfer of these materials through the estuarine zone.
