Abstract
This chapter provides an overview of the major physical, hydrographic, and chemical conditions in the New York Bight, as well as details of the principal shallow waters, embayments, and coastal habitats adjacent to the Bight, based on historical and recent data. Given these data, living resources at risk and the factors affecting them are reviewed. The principal conclusions are that, although the Bight and ancillary waters were once heavily contaminated, the ending of ocean disposal, upgrading of sewage treatment, and general overall improvement in the handling of wastes have resulted in significant improvement in habitat quality.
