Abstract
    To determine the location of a potential clock mechanism in fish and any interaction with melatonin, we have investigated the distribution of melatonin receptor gene expression by in situ hybridization together with that of the period gene (Per1) in the rainbow trout and cod brain and pituitary. Melatonin receptor and Per1 mRNA's were found in brain areas known to be involved in the processing of visual information in both species of fish. Per1 expression varies with time in the cerebellum. The results indicate that in fish a mechanism for the interaction of light, the melatonin signal and the endogenous clock exist.
