Abstract
We have initiated studies to examine the role of apoptosis in follicular atresia of teleost fish. Ovarian follicles from goldfish and rainbow trout were examined for evidence of oligonucleosomal fragmentation (apoptosis) before and after incubation (24-72 h) in serum-free medium. Electrophoretic size fractionation of 3'-end-labeled follicular DNA and in situ (TUNEL) analyses suggest that fish ovarian follicles are highly resistant to apoptosis, and that apoptotic cell death in vivo in healthy follicles is restricted to cells in the theca and surface epithelium. Notable species- and developmental stage-specific differences in susceptibility to apoptotic demise were also observed.
