Abstract |
Annual breeding seasons and the cycle of spermatogenesis varies between teleost species. Recently, five reproductive classes were described in a perciform fish, Centropomus undecimalis, based upon histological changes observed in the germinal epithelium of the testis. S. marmoratus, like perciform teleosts, has a lobular unrestricted testes type, but it is also a protogynic, diandric fresh water fish. As in Monopterus albus, hermaphroditism is sequential, and constitutes natural sex reversal. This work describes the annual reproductive cycle in S. marmoratus (Corrientes Province, 27 degree 25'S; 58 degree 15'W, Argentina) using light and electron microscopy procedures |
