Abstract
The Polder2Cs project started in December 2019 with 12 (now 13) partners willing to increase the knowledge about external erosion of maritime and estuary dikes. Thanks to a dedicated playground, large scale overflow and overtopping experiments have been carried out on the Hedwige and Prosper polder, at the Belgian – Netherlands border, along the river Scheldt.
Meanwhile, several partners developed numerical models aiming to understand the physical phenomenon. Those modelling exercises are supported by extensive geotechnical and geophysical investigations along with laboratory tests.
The paper presents the conclusions of different experiments carried on site and in laboratory, and discusses links between site, lab tests and models about external erosion of dikes. An opening on a simplistic numerical tool to assess external erosion failure under overtopping is finally presented.
This project has received funding from the Interreg 2 Seas programme 2014-2020 co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund under subsidy contract No [2S07-023].
