Abstract
In an endeavour to improve the detection threshold and accuracy of parameter determination for North Sea earthquakes, the IGS and UK Department of Energy embarked on a programme of onshore and offshore seismograph installations in 1979. On land, this amounted to a geographical extension of the limited UK network, particularly into northern Scotland and Shetland. At sea, new techniques have been developed in order to deploy and maintain a continuously recording system with sea-bed sensors linked via a spar buoy to MobilTs production platform, Beryl Alpha. The philosophy and technical details of the offshore station are presented together with the principal difficulties and results.
