Abstract
    Some aspects of the role of geology in seismic risk assessment are discussed. Tertiary faulting is believed to be essentially of normal dip-slip type within poorly consolidated sedimentary sequences and may well be aseismic. Sources of main earthquakes are suggested to lie on deeper reactivated crustal faults, or perhaps even within the uppermost mantle.
