Abstract |
Vitamin-C deficiency in the diet has been demonstrated to be one of the causes of growth anomalies and mortality among intensively cultured sea bass. An adequate vitamin-C content in the diet ensures correct collagen synthesis and normal osteoblastic activity , regular uptake of calcium and its utilization by tissues in erythropoiesis. Vitamin-C ensures the release of iron from reticulo-endothelial deposits. It has also been demonstrated that vitamin-C performs a protective role when the organism is in a state of stress, infection or illness, as well as in the presence of some toxic agents and high temperatures. A study has been carried out to evaluate the need for ascorbic acid in the diet and in commercial pellets utilized as fish feed. The results indicated that 200 mg.kg-1 of dry feed are needed for sea bass farmed in water of 36‰ salinity at 25°C. The need to improve the vitamin-C stability in commercial pellets was demonstrated, in particular when a marine water supply is used to farm the fish. |
