Description:A symposium giving an overview of the research of the past 60 years of the Brussels Universities VUB and ULB in tropical rain forests, savannas, mangrove forests and wetlands in Africa. The research domains go from systematics and evolutionary biology, over vegetation science and anatomy to ecology, biogeography, nature conservation and management.
The built patrimony is worth mentioning with the Vrije Universiteit Brussel Herbarium (BRVU) and the Université Libre de Bruxelles Herbarium (BRLU) with around 400.000 specimens among which approximately 400 type-species, the library of African Botany and an image collection (l’iconothèque numérique de l’ULB).
The symposium will highlight the Brussels’ research in African botany and ecology with founding fathers Paul Duvignaud, Jean Lejoly and Jean-Jacques Symoens. The threat of erosion in taxonomic expertise and the scientific value of the current research will be emphasized in view of the crises in biodiversity
and functionality of ecosystems. The symposium will illustrate the importance of the existing collaborations and allow future partnerships to develop by kindly inviting you to give a poster presentation of your work. |
