Abstract |
Ovarian expression of the transcripts for 3 beta -hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3 beta -HSD) and cytochromes P450 17 alpha -hydroxylase/lyase (P450c17), aromatase (P450arom), and cholesterol side chain cleavage (P450scc) were monitored by ribonuclease protection assay throughout the year in the annually spawning channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus). These data were compared to plasma titers of estradiol (E2) and testosterone (T), and vitellogenic growth of the ovary. The transcript abundance of P450c17, P450scc and P450arom varied significantly in a seasonal pattern and correlated with plasma titers of T and E2 whereas the expression of 3 beta -HSD was relatively stable. Enhanced expression of P450c17 and arom was correlated with ovarian recrudescence and expression of all P450s steadily decreased during the period of vitellogenic growth. These data show that all of these steroidogenic enzymes are expressed throughout the year, however the expression of the cytochromes P450 are seasonally regulated. |
