Abstract |
The influence of tourism in the coastal area has to be considered in relation to the dynamic coastal processes. A review of the evolution of tourism along the Belgian coast describes the degree of deterioration of the natural landscape in terms of loss of its aesthetic quality and the far-reaching consequences of it concerning coastal hazards. Due to avaricious speculation the evolution led to an over-development replacing the natural coastline with high-rise residential blocks allowing private view on the beach. Tourists however have little appreciation of the danger of the sea, and the hazards of living near the beach are still disregarded in the spatial planning. A brief discussion of beach dynamics with emphasis on storm conditions demonstrates that the concept of house property in front of the beach clashes with the natural process. Finally some aspects of stabilisation of the shoreline, and more in particular the effect of seawalls and beach nourishment are described with illustrations from the Belgian coast. |
