Abstract
Proasellus coxalis is a freshwater isopod that occurred only in rivers and estuaries around the Mediterranean Sea. Since 1931, this species spread across Western Europe, probably as a stowaway in the ballast water of inland vessels. In 1998, the species was observed for the first time in Belgium. Since 2011, it occurs in Belgian inland waters, specifically in the centre and west of Flanders. As poor swimmers, freshwater isopods are mainly found between water plants, between stones and on the bottom, where they feed on dead organic matter.
