Abstract
    Concern for safety, phenomenon of a slack towline on tow-towed ships interaction during maneuvering is important subject to be studied. This paper is aimed at clarifying a mechanism of slack towline motion, which comes into derivation of slack towline criteria. Two components i.e., towline length and deflection-rudder angle were treated in numerical analysis to capture this phenomenon. Coupled maneuvering motion equations of tow-towed ships associated with the towline motion was derived. 2D lumped mass method was applied to express a dynamic towline motion. The results revealed that when a towline has slackened-off, tow ship will be vulnerable to mishandle or loose restriction of towing to towed ship. The large towline tension at some time after the slackening may introduce successive sea accidents such as breakage of the towline, which then followed by loss towing of a towed ship and often causes collision between tow ship and other vessel especially in the confined waters with high sea-traffic mode.
