Abstract |
Settlements of Pecten maximus were collected in Mulroy Bay, Ireland, during the summers of 1979,1980 and 1981 and each year-class was grown on separately in lantern nets on the west Coast of Ireland. In 1983, samples from each year-class were measured and scored at 6 enzyme loci (Pgm, Gpi, Odh, Lap-I , Mdh-I and Mdh-2) using starch gel electrophoresis. No significant differences in allele frequencies were observed at any loci between year-classes and phenotype proportions at all loci, except Lap-I, were in good agreement with Hardy-Weinberg expectations. A significant deficiency of heterozygotes was observed at the Lap-I locus in two of the year-classes. Individual heterozygosity at these loci was unrelated to shell length except in the case of the GPI locus in the 1980 year-class where homozygotes were significantly larger than heterozygotes, and the Odh locus in the 1981 year class where homozygotes were significantly smaller than heterozygotes. During 1982 and 1983, two families of Pecten maximus were reared at Menai Bridge, North Wales, U.K., until one year old. Offspring were measured and then typed at 6 enzyme loci (Pgm, Gpi, Odh, Lap-I, Es-I and Pgd). Phenotype proportions at all loci in both families did not differ significantly from Mendelian ratios except at the Es-I locus in one family. No correlation was observed between individual heterozygosity and size amongst the offspring from the two families. The lack of an observed relationship between size and heterozygosity in wild-type year-class cohorts, and also in single families is discussed in relation to observations on other bivalve species. |
