Abstract
A diagnostic advection-diffusion equation system is a "natural coordinate" frame of reference is investigated in order to improve its robustness. The dependence of the leading-order solutions on higher-order features of the hydrographic data has been decreased and a differential equation with an analytical solution is obtained. The properties of the lower-order equation are compared with previous studies where the undegenerated equations were used to estimate the distribution of both the diapycnal salt flux and the oxygen consumption with the Baltic proper. The agreement found is within the acceptable bounds. Finally a pilot study of a silicate budget of the Baltic proper has been performed.
