Abstract |
Experiments were carried out with Seriola dumerilii during the period October 1984 -September 1985. This fish has a very good market value and can reach 70kg in the open sea. Young fish were collected with lines and bottom opening tops. Young fish were fattened in concrete ponds and fed once every other day with a monospecific diet, up to 1.4kg. No relevant mortalities due to pathogens was observed during the farming period in the lot examined. Seriola dumerilii showed a good response to handling and a high growth rate. Collection of young fish continued in 1986 and is planned in 1987 also in order to create an adult stock of fish to attempt controlled reproduction experiments. The feeding on cheap abundant pelagic fish, the simplicity of rearing techniques in concrete ponds, the high growth rate observed, together with the low mortality, make this species a very interesting candidate for commercial culturing. |
