Abstract
During a 24-months period (October 1978 to October 1980) fluorescnce (mF1) was measured in the Ems-Dollart estuary. From the linearity of the inverse relation between fluorescence and salinity it is concluded that the fluorescence mainly originates from the rivers and behaves conservatively. During the summer, there was an increase in fluorescence at high salinity. The possible sources responsible for this increase in the outer part of the estuary are given. To establish the polymeric character of the fluorescent matter, ultra-filtration was done during 5 surveys between February and August 1980. The fraction with a M.W. smaller than 500 showed a high (39 to 76%) contribution to the total fluorescence for all dates. It was concluded that the measure of aggregation of fluorescent material can change during transport in the estuary.
