Abstract
Pattern and process in the vertical structure of bryophyte communities in the coastal dunes of Meijendel, in The Netherlands, were studied by analysing digits of lateral photographs of permanent plots. The dunes plots were located at two different sites, one on a south-facing slope to the sea, and two situated in an older part of the dune system. This method appears to be a useful adjunct to the existing range of methods used to describe variation in space and time in the vertical canopy of communities.
