Abstract |
A two-dimensional, reduced gravity model is established to study the wind-induced oscillations of the thermocline of Lake Tanganyika. An analytical solution is obtained for a simplified, one-dimensional, linearized set of equations, which suggests that the first mode of oscillation - exhibiting one node only - should be dominant. The sensitivity to the wind stress, the stratification and the unpertubed thermocline depth of the amplitude and period of t he linear solution is analysed. Numerical solutions of the complete, non-linear, two-dimensional reduced-gravity model are compared cursorily with field data and are seen to exhibit properties that are rather similar to those of the idealized, one-dimensional model. |
