The day started as usual with a presentation of the career of an older hand in the marine sciences (Willy Baeyens). Four very interesting presentations followed in the disciplines of maritime archaeology (Arne Van Essen), ornithology (Eric Stienen), remote sensing (Bart Deronde) and chemistry-toxicology (Inneke Van de Vijver).
As an introduction to the afternoon programme Wouter Rommens explained what the IOC Project Office for IODE in Ostend can mean for Flemish marine scientists. Following a busy poster presentation and demonstration session, the VLIZ awards were presented: the VLIZ North Sea award to Oscar G. Bos, the VLIZ Thesis Awards to Ivy Meert and Kristien Schelfaut, and the VLIZ Poster Awards to Heidi Vanden Broeck and co-authors (professional jury) and Els Verfaillie and co-authors (public jury). The photo contest was won by Wouter Willems – with a micro-shot of the beach in the snow – and will certainly be repeated in a the next edition of the VLIZ Young Marine Scientists’ Day. Spread the word!
