VLIZ looks back on 2018



The 2018 annual report provides information on, amongst others, the VLIZ research projects launched in 2018. Two excellent examples illustrating the VLIZ Research division’s growth, interdisciplinarity and unique position in the national and international research landscape are discussed. Also, the crucial role that VLIZ plays in the Blue Cluster, which came into being in 2018, and the accreditation of the VLIZ data centre (Flanders Marine Data and Information Centre) as an IODE National Oceanographic Data Centre in December 2018, are highlighted. Furthermore, attention is paid to the contribution of VLIZ on a Flemish, European and global level. The continued development of state-of-the-art research infrastructure. The diversity of new publications ranging from A1 publications in renowned journals to books, regular publications such as De Grote Rede and Zeekrant, digital information graphs and animations. The launch of a new edition of the Compendium for Coast and Sea and the Coastal Portal. The events organized by VLIZ in 2018, including the following highlights: the exhibition 1914-’18: The Battle for the North Sea to commemorate the centenary of the First World War, the 53rd edition of the European Marine Biology Symposium (EMBS) and the first edition of the Big Shell Counting Day, with which VLIZ aims to promote citizen science among the general public.
