Every year the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) presents the 'North sea award' to a scientist or research team doing a fundamental or applied research unraveling structure or functioning of the North Sea ecosytem (with emphasis on the Southern Bight of the North Sea).

The laureats are working in and are residing in a country bordering the North Sea. The prize amounts to 1000 EUR and is indivisible. It is granted to reward a recent original scientific contribution, preferably having relevance to the sustainable management of the area concerned. Studies pertaining to the biodiversity of the local ecosystem are equally welcomed. The contribution has to be of postgraduate or postdoctoral level.

The North Sea Award will be officially presented on the occasion of the 12th VLIZ Young Marine Scientists' Day on the 24th of February 2012.

Candidates are requested to submit the file before the 15th of November 2011. More information about the procedure is available on the VLIZ website or in the regulations.
