Every year the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) presents the 'North sea award' to a scientist or research team doing a fundamental or applied research unraveling structure or functioning of the North Sea ecosytem (with emphasis on the Southern Bight of the North Sea).

The laureats are working in and are residing in a country bordering the North Sea. The prize amounts to 1000 EUR and is indivisible. It is granted to reward a recent original scientific contribution, preferably having relevance to the sustainable management of the area concerned. Studies pertaining to the biodiversity of the local ecosystem are equally welcomed. The contribution has to be of postgraduate or postdoctoral level.

The North Sea Award will be officially presented on the occasion of the celebration of the 10th anniversary of VLIZ on the 27th of November 2009.

Candidates are requested to submit the file before the 10th of October 2009. More information about the procedure is available on the VLIZ website or in the regulations.
