At the congress, VLIZ director Jan Mees explained the cyclic aspect of a research process. Usually, this process starts with a collection of data and ends with publications that can, at their turn, lead to new research. To clarify this, he used examples of research done by Flemish scientists on board of the RV Simon Stevin.
VLIZ librarian Jan Haspeslagh illustrated the work of the VLIZ library and data center: the taxonomic and biogeographic information present in the literature collection is linked to the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) and the international list of georeferenced place names and areas (Marine Regions). He also gave an account on the data archeology effort of the complete digital record collection of the Flemish research program ‘Projekt Zee 1970-1976’ and how this results in a unique dataset that is presented on the 4DEMON-platform, where it can support reuse and new analyses.
In the evening, the participants of the congress had the opportunity to visit the VLIZ library and the research vessel Simon Stevin. This guided tour was greatly appreciated!
