The European Commission, together with Mercator Ocean International and Flanders Marine Institute VLIZ, are organising the European Digital Ocean Forum 2023. The event will take place on 15 June 2023 in Brussels, as a hybrid event, with the aim bringing together experts, stakeholders, policymakers and interested citizens in the co-design and co-creation of the European Digital Twin of the Ocean (EU DTO). The organisors ask for your input on how this virtual test environment can be optimally developed for trying out your applications, before rolling them out in the real ocean!

Digital Ocean Forum 2023

The European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research (DG RTD) and Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE) together with Mercator Ocean International and VLIZ are organising the European Digital Ocean Forum 2023.  The event will take place on 15 June 2023 as a hybrid event, with the aim bringing together experts, stakeholders, policymakers and interested citizens in the co-design and co-creation of the European Digital Twin of the Ocean (EU DTO).

A digital twin of the Ocean as a virtuel test environment

The European Digital of the Twin Ocean (EU DTO) aims at making ocean knowledge readily available to citizens, entrepreneurs, scientists and policymakers by providing them with an innovative set of user-driven, interactive and visualisation tools.  Leveraging on existing European science and assets, the European DTO will provide consistent high-resolution, multi-dimensional descriptions of the ocean. This includes its physical, chemical, biological, socio-ecological and economic dimensions, with forecasting periods ranging from seasons to multi-decades.

The European DTO is a collaborative environment,  that will be founded on a digital operational backbone (henceforth called the European Digital Twin Ocean INFRA or EDITO- INFRA), providing the architecture  for EU projects to upload and share their own ocean science and data.

What to expect from the Digital Ocean Forum 2023?

  • Present the EU DTO vision and report on progress to date.

  • Provide feedback from a technical workshop, held on 14 June,  involving experts from approximately 50 invited research organisations and projects to gather their input on the development of the EU DTO, methods for potential contributions.

  • Engage in forward looking discussion on how the EU DTO should serve Ocean communities and actors, how it should evolve, and how it will impact policy and decision making.
