Abstract
The present paper presents the study of hydrodynamic interaction loads between two tanker types of ships involved in typical underway lightering operation. It was assumed that the execution of complete lightering maneuver takes place in open and deep waters by considering calm water conditions.

The hydrodynamic interaction effects in time domain are estimated by using three dimensional (3D) potential flow theory based method recently developed by Xiang and Faltinsen [1]. The method is further compared against near-field theoretical results given by Newman [2] and Wang [3, 17]. In addition, based on the comparison of interaction forces/moments estimated for a close proximity scenario of two different bodies of identical length/beam ratio the applicability of the near-field theories is discussed. In particular, it is shown that the near-field theories tend to overpredict the interacting loads between slender bodies with blunt ends. Thus, 3D method should be a preferable choice when studying hydrodynamic interaction effects between ships of modern hull forms.

The 3D hydrodynamic interaction loads solver is implemented with the combined seakeeping and maneuvering model by Skejic and Faltinsen [4, 5 and 6] in calm water conditions. A lightering operation is simulated using Aframax and KVLCC (type 2 – Moeri tanker) tanker type of ships on selected drafts. Typical relative positions between the two ships and development of the lightering maneuver were chosen in accordance to Skejic and Berg [7, 8]. Finally, the future requirements and recommendations concerning the qualitative and accurate prediction of the hydrodynamic interaction loads in the real time are discussed from the perspective of typical lightering operations.
